Silk Screening Plastic
Silk screening is a printing process where you burn images into screens with photosensitive emulsion and light. Once the screen is dry, the process where the image is burned into the screen is complete. Ink is then spread onto the screen and pushed through to whatever material you are printing on. Not only can you print on t-shirts, but you can also print a nearly everything from paper, to metal and even plastic! Silk screening plastic requires a special process to make sure the ink properly sticks to the slick surface of the plastic.
Silk Screening Plastic
First you need to decide what image you want on the plastic and prepare your screen. If you plan on using a design or image with more than one color, you will then need to make a screen for each color. After deciding on your image, you will then need to mount the plastic so it will not shift or move during the printing process. Using masking tape at each corner with secure it and the tape will not cause and damage to the plastic. The next step in silk screening plastic is positioning the screen over the plastic and applying a very thin layer of ink over the image. When applying the ink you should be careful with how much you use because applying to much through the screen could cause the ink to smear or if you are using multiple colors, the colors could bleed. The last and final step for silk screening plastic is carefully and slowly removing the screen from the plastic. Because of the plastic being so slick, the ink is still likely to smear regardless of how little ink you use. Place the plastic in a safe place and allow the ink to dry for several hours before moving the plastic again.
